The concept as well as the reality of interregional exchange is central to the Culture Ministry’s preoccupations and objectives, an interest stemming from the country’s geographical situation at a major European crossroads that has always made it a place for international diplomacy and constant exchanges. This has been reaffirmed more recently with the experience of “Luxembourg and Greater Region, European Capital of Culture 2007” whose concept was based on the idea of sustainable cultural development through trans border cooperation and creativity and the mobility of regional and European audiences. Also regarded as an opportunity to create the basis for sustainable cooperation - which is indeed driven forward since 2007 via the association “Greater Region cultural area”, grouping the regional authorities of Saarland, Lorraine, Rhineland-Palatinate, Wallonia, the German-speaking Community of Belgium and Luxembourg - the experience acquired in terms of policy development instruments can now be prolonged and widened by cross-fertilising it with those made in the context of the cultural routes, two of which are administered by the Ministry’s “Service des sites et monuments nationaux” (Service for national sites and monuments). Nevertheless, despite acquired insights and knowledge, the linkage with other sectors in view of sustainable cultural tourism strategies - not only nationally - remains a constant challenge for which the project should deliver concrete, understandable and applicable methods.
